Part B
Two Ideas I learned about Pompeii:
-Two cities were actually destroyed and completely covered with volcanic ash, Pompeii and Herculaneum.
-Herculaneum did not stand out in importance because the volcanic material made it harder to excavate.

One Navigational Strategy:
-The discovery channel website had words that could be used as links if you wanted to learn more about that word. When I saw Herculaneum was highlighted and I clicked on that link I learned more on that city.

One Reliable Source of Information:
-The discovery channel source was very reliable since it had a clearly stated author, realistic/historical pictures from actual Pompeii sites, clearly stated sources and citations, and an option to write to the author.

One Informational feature:
-Actual pictures of artifacts, excavated towns, casts of people, and recovered paintings would be appropriate for fourth graders studying this topic since it could give them a good visual of what happened to the people and the town of Pompeii

Exploring What is Left of Pompeii

Jack and Annie discovered some amazing facts about the city of Pompeii when they traveled back in time in the book we read called Vacation under the Volcano. The volcano called Mount Vesuvius effected Pompeii in many ways on that day of August 24, 74 A.D. Now it is your turn to do some investigating through on Internet Activity just like Jack and Annie did. Read the directions below and be sure to record like Jack and write what you think is interesting in your notebook as you travel through cyberspace!

Part 1: Visualizing
Click on the bookmarked page titled “Pompeii Photo Gallery”, explore the website, and answer the questions:

http://wings.buffalo.edu/AandL/Maecenas/italy_except_rome_and_sicily/pompeii/thumbnails_contents.html.

1) What sort of material did Pompeii residents use most in building their town?
2) Why do you think this town looks different than the towns we see every day?
3) What is one architectural structure that you think looks most different than what you see everyday. Is there one structure that looks similar?

Part 2: Critical Thinking
Click on the bookmarked page titled “Awesome Pompeii Stories”, explore the website, and answer the questions:

http://www.awesomestories.com/disasters/pompeii/pompeii_ch1.htm

1) Where did the residents go for shelter when they felt the earth shaking and who did they find shelter with? Why?
2) Choose three words highlighted in blue that you do not understand or would like to learn more about. Describe each picture that appears and something new that you learned from that picture. How does that picture connect to the sentence it was in?

Reflection:

1) List three new things you learned about navigating through the internet.
2) In what types of situations do you think it is useful to use the internet?
3) What was your favorite part of looking around the internet?
